Wedding trends come and go, but this one’s actually pretty innovative. There’s a good chance you’ve had your wedding hairstyle picked out for quite some time. In fact, you probably envisioned the look the second you said yes to the dress. But once those ceremony pictures are taken, it’s time for a new look. And that’s probably why brides are now scheduling a haircut in-between the reception festivities at their weddings.

Who has time for that, you might ask? Well, certain hairstylists are used to creating fashionable ‘dos in a pinch. Since a lot of women immediately cut their hair after their big day, it’s almost like the bride is saving themselves an appointment after their honeymoon. Since changing your hair can majorly change up your appearance, it’s a cool way to get two bridal looks during one wedding.

A wedding haircut is also bound to get guests talking. So if you’re seeking out techniques to make sure your wedding is unforgettable, a “secret haircut” isn’t such a bad idea.

Of course, there may be a few negatives. For one, stray hairs that fell on you during your cut — especially if you’re not planning on changing into a reception dress.

Also, what if you hate it? Everyone’s gotten at least one haircut they’ve been not-too-happy with, so it’d be kind of a bummer to associate such a happy day with such an awful chop.

Refinery29 interviewed one recipient of a during-the-reception cut named Kayla. Both Kayla and sister AJ were the only ones who knew it’d be happening. Between the speeches and the first dance, AJ pulled Kayla aside to give her the secret haircut. “She had this whole new energy — I’ve never seen her so confident,” AJ admitted after Kayla made her big reveal.

So is the idea for you? That all depends. You’ll need to find someone who works quick, and someone you trust. If that’s all taken care of, it’s a fantastic way to surprise guests — along with your new life partner.
