It’s no secret that nail art can get a little over-the-top. In the last few years, social media has shown us a wide variety of different designs, all more elaborate than the last. So maybe we shouldn’t be shocked that the latest nail trend has gotten more personal than ever. Ultrasound nails are what we’re referring to, and yes, they are exactly what they sound like… and we can’t help but feel a little confused.

According to the Independent UK, new moms are now getting their ultrasound scans painted on their nails (weirdly enough, it resembles marble nail art). The trend was started at Sarenity Hair and Beauty, which started the service at its Stockton-on-Tees-based salon. After the image of one customer’s baby scan nail went viral on Facebook, they started getting tons of requests for more.

The design was created by nail artist Sarah Clarke, who said that it’s actually more simple to do than it seems.

Customers send over their ultrasound scans and Clarke recreates them on a single acrylic nail using paint and a fine brush. Customers can glue the nail on like a normal acrylic, or even frame it.

A full set of the ultrasound nails will set you back only £40, which really isn’t that much when you consider all of the work going into them, not to mention the sentimental value! Clarke told Pretty52, “I don’t like to charge a lot for my nails as I do not want to discourage people from getting them done and preventing me from trying out new things.”

Check out some of the coolest ultrasound nails online right now to get inspired if you’re interested in trying it out:
