Put a 60-something celebrity today next to one from the 1980s, and you might find yourself checking their ages twice. It isn’t that people stopped aging. Hollywood simply looks at 60 very differently now, and these photos show just how much has changed.
Maureen O’Hara turned 60 in 1980, decades after The Quiet Man helped make her one of Hollywood’s most recognizable beauties. Fast-forward to Demi Moore at 62, arriving at the 2025 Golden Globes with waist-length hair and a shimmering sculptural gown before winning for The Substance. Neither woman was short on glamour. What’s striking is how differently that glamour was packaged. Moore wasn’t styled as an “older” version of a movie star. She was simply styled like a movie star. And when another Golden Age favorite meets a modern leading lady, the gap becomes even more noticeable.
Doris Day was 63 when photographers captured her at a 1985 press conference, years after she had largely stepped away from Hollywood movies. Michelle Pfeiffer was 66 when she put her hands and feet in cement at Hollywood’s TCL Chinese Theatre in April 2025, with new screen projects still part of the conversation. The difference goes beyond blonde hair and great tailoring. Actresses once faced much stronger pressure to disappear from leading-lady territory as they aged. Today, a woman nearing 70 can remain both a working star and a fashion fixture. The wardrobe rules have loosened too.
Lauren Bacall turned 60 in 1984 and remained every inch the sophisticated Hollywood icon. Yet photographs from the period also reflect an era when women were expected to adopt a noticeably more “mature” look as they got older. Sharon Stone, who was 67 in 2025, operates under a different fashion rulebook. She still appears in daring gowns and contemporary silhouettes without seeming particularly interested in the old instruction to “dress your age.” That’s one reason these side-by-side images can be so surprising: sometimes what looks like an age difference is really a styling difference. The next pair makes that especially clear.
Shelley Winters entered her 60s in 1980 as an Oscar-winning veteran who was still working steadily. Julianne Moore turned 65 in December 2025 while remaining a regular presence in film and high fashion. Put images from their respective eras beside each other and the power of styling becomes difficult to miss. Haircuts, makeup, jewelry and clothing silhouettes all send subtle messages about how old we think somebody is. Many of the visual shortcuts that once screamed “mature woman” have disappeared from modern red carpets. But clothes aren’t the only thing Hollywood has reconsidered. The roles have changed as well.
Angela Lansbury turned 60 in October 1985, just as Jessica Fletcher was becoming one of television’s most beloved amateur detectives on Murder, She Wrote. Angela Bassett turned 68 in 2026 after spending her 60s playing queens, political leaders and physically commanding characters while remaining a red-carpet standout. That contrast says plenty about casting. Lansbury had a spectacular career, but Jessica Fletcher was unmistakably presented as a mature woman. Bassett’s roles show how much more elastic the image of a woman over 60 can now be. Male movie stars have experienced their own version of that shift.
Paul Newman was 61 when The Color of Money arrived in 1986, pairing him with a 24-year-old Tom Cruise. Newman was still impossibly charismatic, but the movie made his veteran status part of the story. Brad Pitt turned 62 in December 2025 after starring in F1, where he remained squarely in movie-star leading-man mode. That’s a subtle but important change. Newman was still a star after 60, but Hollywood acknowledged that he had crossed into a different chapter. Today’s biggest male stars can reach the same age without the industry necessarily changing the way it sells them. Even gray hair has acquired a different meaning.
Tony Curtis turned 60 in 1985, decades after becoming one of Hollywood’s definitive heartthrobs. Contemporary coverage openly noted his silver hair and changing appearance, treating 60 as a visible milestone. George Clooney’s famous gray hair tells a very different story. At 64 in 2025, it wasn’t something separating him from his leading-man years. It was practically part of the brand. Somewhere along the way, gray hair on Hollywood men went from a marker of entering a new life stage to something that could actually reinforce a star’s appeal. And some celebrities have blurred the boundary even further.
Sidney Poitier turned 60 in February 1987 as he returned to acting after spending several years focused largely on directing. A relaxed portrait from that year shows a distinguished star settling comfortably into another phase of an extraordinary career. Keanu Reeves turned 62 in September 2026 with long hair, a beard and a public image still closely connected to action movies. Nothing about his styling announces a compulsory transition into “elder statesman” territory. That’s part of what has changed: celebrities have more freedom to carry familiar looks into their 60s instead of adopting an entirely new visual identity. Then there’s Tom Cruise.
Gregory Peck was 65 when he appeared in the 1982 miniseries The Blue and the Gray, looking every bit the distinguished screen legend Hollywood expected him to be. Tom Cruise turned 64 in July 2026 after spending his early 60s hanging from planes, racing through action sequences and continuing the blockbuster persona he built decades earlier. Peck was still handsome and commanding, but his age informed how he was presented. Cruise’s career suggests that today’s Hollywood is willing to stretch the action-hero years much further. Our final pairing shows that this isn’t limited to blockbuster stars.
Burt Lancaster was 69 in 1983, decades after his famously athletic roles helped make him a Hollywood star. Rob Lowe turned 62 in March 2026, with a public image still closely tied to fitness, youthful styling and an active television career. The interesting part isn’t deciding which man looks younger. It’s seeing how differently Hollywood presented stars of similar ages across generations.
And if the industry’s idea of 60 has changed this much in four decades, imagine what 70 might look like next. As today’s stars continue embracing leading roles, bold fashion and active lifestyles well into their later years, the old rules about “looking your age” may become even harder to define. Who knows? The celebrity photos we’re taking today might look just as surprising 40 years from now.
