For about 24 hours, it felt like the Spice Girls announcement fans had waited years to hear might finally be coming. A mysterious video. A precise countdown. A nod to the group’s earliest days. Reunion speculation went into overdrive, with one fan joking they would sell their house for tour tickets. Then reveal time arrived. No tour. No five-Spice comeback. Instead, fans got a box set, and the internet’s excitement quickly turned into one enormous millennial sigh.

To Be Fair, the Teaser Was Practically Begging to Be Investigated

The Sept. 9 video wasn’t some generic “big news tomorrow” post. It returned to the staircase at London’s St. Pancras Renaissance Hotel, where the “Wannabe” video was filmed, and featured The Stage, the trade publication that carried the 1994 advertisement connected to the group’s formation. Then came a classified-style message seeking a Spice Girls “superfan, a collector, a music lover.” For longtime fans trained by years of reunion rumors, every frame looked like a clue.

There Was One Giant Clue Everyone Conveniently Ignored

The teaser actually told fans where this was going. Buried in the faux classified was the line: “No sheet music required but you will need a vinyl or CD player.” Some eagle-eyed followers immediately guessed a re-release. Plenty of others apparently decided optimism was more fun and started dreaming about a world tour or even a Las Vegas Sphere residency. By the next day, those seven little words about vinyl and CDs suddenly looked much less cryptic.

Surprise! It Was The Singles Collection

The big reveal was The Singles Collection, arriving Nov. 6. The release gathers the group’s singles and B-sides into 14-disc colored-vinyl and CD box sets, complete with original artwork, previously unreleased demos and material “from the vault.” One early demo, “Do You Think About Me,” immediately landed on streaming services. For serious collectors, that’s substantial. For fans who had mentally jumped ahead to hearing “Spice Up Your Life” in a packed stadium, it wasn’t quite the announcement they imagined.

The Fan Reactions Were Almost Better Than the Announcement

Nobody does disappointed humor quite like a fanbase that already calculated its concert budget. “puts credit card back in purse,” one person wrote. Another had apparently been negotiating a Spice Girls ticket spending limit with her husband “for NOTHING.” One fan joked that the kids could eat after all because they’d expected “beans on toast for a month.” Perhaps the most devastating review required only six words: “This could have been an email.”

Thirty Years of “Wannabe” Made the Timing Feel Huge

The hype didn’t appear from nowhere. “Wannabe,” released in 1996, turned 30 this year, and so did the group’s blockbuster debut album Spice. The album sold more than 23 million copies worldwide, according to NewsNation, while the Spice Girls became one of the defining pop acts of the decade. An anniversary that big naturally made 2026 feel like the perfect moment to get Scary, Sporty, Baby, Ginger and Posh back on one stage.

Fans Have Been Here Before

This isn’t the first time reunion hopes have started bubbling. The five women have reunited on several occasions since the original group split, including a performance at the 2012 London Olympics. In 2019, Mel B, Mel C, Emma Bunton and Geri Halliwell toured the U.K. and Ireland, but Victoria Beckham sat it out. The last tour featuring all five ended back in 2008. For fans wanting the complete lineup, that’s an awfully long wait.

Posh Spice Remains the Biggest Question Mark

A full reunion inevitably leads back to Victoria Beckham. She hasn’t publicly performed with the group since 2012 and has explained that performing is no longer where she wants to focus her energy. She has also cited the demands of her business when discussing why a world tour would be difficult. Mel B, meanwhile, spent years enthusiastically talking up another tour before saying this year that she had stopped “nagging everyone” to do one.

But the Five of Them Are Still Very Much in Each Other’s Lives

Here’s the part that keeps hope alive. All five were together privately this year, when Victoria’s son Cruz shared a video of them singing “Viva Forever” around a dinner table as he played guitar. The clip racked up more than 13 million views. Victoria also designed Mel C’s wedding dress, even though she couldn’t attend the wedding. So the obstacle doesn’t appear to be whether the women can still share a room. Getting them all onto a stage is the harder part.

The Reunion Door Isn’t Locked, Just Frustratingly Unopened

For now, The Singles Collection is what fans are getting. But the reaction to its announcement made one thing impossible to miss: three decades later, people still desperately want the live reunion. Mel C said earlier this year that there was no anniversary reunion planned, while also saying she remained optimistic fans would eventually see the group together again. Until five schedules and five ambitions line up, every mysterious Spice Girls post may keep causing the same ritual: panic first, read the fine print second.
