University programs connected to the IRS’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) are helping Gen Z discover the real-world impact of accounting. Students are offering free tax filing support to low-income families, gaining experience while easing financial stress for people who need it most.
These students see firsthand how their work changes lives. From helping farmers without internet access to assisting families secure thousands in refunds, the value goes far beyond forms and receipts. Each case highlights that accounting, at its heart, is about supporting people in navigating their financial reality.
The numbers prove the impact. At California State University, Northridge, student volunteers helped 9,000 taxpayers in 2024 alone, securing nearly $11 million in refunds and saving $2 million in preparation costs. For households living paycheck to paycheck, those savings can make all the difference.
Technology is reshaping what it means to be an accountant. With artificial intelligence and digital tools handling routine calculations, professionals focus more on analysis and strategy. For Gen Z, this digital-friendly environment aligns naturally with their skills and expectations, making the career more attractive.
Accounting offers something many young workers now seek: job security. Median salaries approach six figures, and certified accountants can earn far more. At some universities, nearly all graduates quickly secure jobs. For Gen Z, a career that combines stability with meaningful impact is hard to overlook.
Far from fading away, accounting is being reimagined by a generation that values both purpose and practicality. Gen Z is showing that this profession is not just about numbers—it’s about building trust, solving problems, and ensuring stability in uncertain times. The future of accounting may look brighter than ever.
