Current and former employees at leading artificial intelligence companies like OpenAI and Google DeepMind have issued a stark warning. In an open letter, 13 workers claimed AI could pose a threat of human extinction without proper safeguards. The group argues that powerful tech firms have financial incentives to avoid oversight and silence critics. Their message is clear: employees need protection to speak out about AI dangers. What really are the dangers that are coming to us?
The open letter, titled “A Right to Warn about Advanced Artificial Intelligence,” was published in June 2024. It was signed by mostly former OpenAI employees, along with workers from Anthropic and Google DeepMind. According to TIME, 11 signatories came from OpenAI, with six choosing anonymity. The letter states risks range from deepening inequality to misinformation, and ultimately loss of control over AI systems. As one signatory told PBS, companies prioritize ‘profits over responsibility’. The workers want transparency and whistleblower protections now.
The letter warns of the loss of control over autonomous AI systems, potentially leading to human extinction. Experts call this the AGI problem—artificial general intelligence as smart as humans. If AI becomes superintelligent and can improve itself, it might develop goals that conflict with humanity’s survival. NPR reporter Bobby Allyn explained that researchers debate something called “P(doom)”—the probability AI could turn catastrophic. While killer robots sound like fiction, the foundation is being laid today. Could we create something we can’t control?
Beyond existential threats, AI poses immediate risks we’re seeing now. The letter mentions manipulation, misinformation, and entrenched inequalities. Deepfakes can impersonate anyone convincingly. AI-generated misinformation spreads faster than the truth online. According to PBS, former employees believe OpenAI isn’t doing enough to prevent these harms. The AI Policy Institute found 83% of Americans worry AI could accidentally cause a catastrophe. These aren’t distant possibilities—they’re happening today. Yet companies race ahead anyway. What happens when speed matters more than safety?
Many employees signed confidentiality agreements preventing them from criticizing their employers. The letter emerged after OpenAI forced departing workers to choose between keeping their vested stock or signing non-disparagement agreements that never expired. OpenAI later dropped this requirement, calling it inconsistent with company values. According to the New York Times, lawyer Lawrence Lessig noted employees are an important safety defense. If they can’t speak freely, that channel closes. Workers know what’s really happening inside. Should they stay silent?
The letter arrived during a tumultuous period for OpenAI. The company disbanded its AI safety team in May 2024, less than a year after forming it. Key researchers departed, including co-founder Ilya Sutskever. Actress Scarlett Johansson accused OpenAI of using her voice without permission for their AI assistant. CEO Sam Altman was briefly removed by the board in late 2023, then reinstated days later. Fox Business reported the company claims 92% of Fortune 500 companies use their products safely. But can users trust a company in constant turmoil?
AGI represents AI that matches or exceeds human intelligence across all tasks. According to CNN, some experts believe AGI could arrive by 2028, though others think it’s much further away. A US State Department-commissioned report called AGI an extinction-level threat comparable to weapons of mass destruction. The problem? Once created, AGI could recursively improve itself beyond human control. As Geoffrey Hinton told Wikipedia, what was once a 20-to-50-year timeline might now be 20 years or less. Companies compete intensely. Is humanity ready for what comes next?
OpenAI responded to the letter by emphasizing its safety record. A company spokesperson told The Independent they provide the most capable and safest AI systems available. They pointed to an anonymous employee hotline, a Safety and Security Committee, and support for AI regulation. OpenAI also highlighted voluntary safety commitments. The company maintains it encourages rigorous debate and engages with governments and civil society globally. According to Tom’s Guide, OpenAI insists it never clawed back vested equity from employees. But actions speak louder than promises.
Governments worldwide are waking up to AI risks. The European Union passed the world’s first comprehensive AI legislation in early 2024. President Biden signed an AI executive order requiring companies to disclose development plans to the Commerce Department. International AI Safety Summits in the UK and South Korea brought nations together. The letter signatories acknowledge governments recognize the dangers. However, ordinary whistleblower laws focus on illegal activity, not unregulated risks. According to Berkeley’s Kavli Center, protecting employee speech is a crucial first step. Can regulation keep pace with innovation?
The open letter represents a pivotal moment in AI development. Workers inside the most advanced AI labs are warning us about dangers they see firsthand. They’re calling for anonymous reporting channels, protection from retaliation, and a culture of open criticism. As Neel Nanda of DeepMind wrote on X, any lab creating AGI must prove itself worthy of public trust. The technology promises unprecedented benefits, but also unprecedented risks. Society stands at a crossroads. Will we listen to these warnings before it’s too late?
