Cracker Barrel Old Country Store is undergoing another major leadership change after CEO Julie Masino announced she will step down following months of controversy surrounding the company’s attempted rebranding. Masino, who became CEO in 2023, led an effort to modernize the restaurant chain’s image, menu, and store design in hopes of attracting younger customers. However, many longtime patrons felt the changes strayed too far from the company’s traditional identity, triggering widespread criticism and declining customer traffic.

The backlash centered on a redesigned company logo that removed the familiar “Old Timer,” also known as Uncle Herschel, along with plans to modernize restaurant interiors. Customer criticism quickly spread across social media, prompting the company to reverse the logo change within days and eventually suspend its restaurant remodeling plans. Despite later efforts to restore customer confidence, the controversy continued to overshadow the brand.

Cracker Barrel announced that Masino will step down as CEO on August 10, 2026, while remaining in an advisory role until October to help with the transition. She will be succeeded by David Deno, the former CEO of Bloomin’ Brands, who has been tasked with rebuilding momentum and strengthening the company’s connection with its loyal customer base.

    Rebranding Effort Sparked Customer Backlash

Masino’s strategy focused on refreshing Cracker Barrel’s image to appeal to new generations of diners. The company introduced updated menu items, tested redesigned restaurant interiors, and unveiled a simplified logo that removed one of the brand’s most recognizable symbols. Executives believed these changes would modernize the nearly 660-location chain while preserving its Southern hospitality.

Instead, many loyal customers reacted negatively, saying the updates stripped away the nostalgic atmosphere that had made Cracker Barrel unique for decades. The logo redesign became particularly controversial, leading to criticism across social media and drawing national attention. Facing mounting pressure, the company restored the original logo featuring the “Old Timer” character and halted broader remodeling efforts after testing them in only a handful of restaurants.

The controversy also affected business performance. Same-store sales weakened, customer traffic declined, and activist investors questioned the company’s direction. Although Cracker Barrel later introduced popular menu offerings and partnerships to help improve results, executives acknowledged that rebuilding guest trust would take time.

David Deno will assume the role of CEO on August 10 after previously leading Bloomin’ Brands, the parent company of Outback Steakhouse, Carrabba’s Italian Grill, and Bonefish Grill. He also held executive positions at Best Buy and Yum! Brands earlier in his career. Company leaders believe his extensive restaurant industry experience will help guide Cracker Barrel through its next chapter.

Industry analysts expect Deno to focus on strengthening Cracker Barrel’s traditional identity while continuing to pursue measured improvements that do not alienate the company’s core customer base. Many observers believe the leadership transition reflects a renewed emphasis on preserving the brand’s heritage rather than pursuing dramatic image changes.

Although recent financial performance had begun to improve before Masino’s departure was announced, investors remain cautious about the company’s long-term growth prospects. Deno will face the challenge of balancing innovation with the nostalgic appeal that has long defined Cracker Barrel’s success.

Julie Masino’s departure marks the end of a challenging period for Cracker Barrel, during which ambitious modernization efforts collided with the expectations of a deeply loyal customer base. While the company sought to attract new diners, many longtime guests made it clear they valued the classic atmosphere, familiar branding, and traditional dining experience that had defined the chain for decades.

With David Deno preparing to take over as CEO, Cracker Barrel is expected to place greater emphasis on its heritage while carefully evaluating future changes. Company leaders hope this strategy will help restore customer confidence, improve restaurant traffic, and position the brand for sustainable growth.

The leadership transition illustrates the challenges many established restaurant chains face as they attempt to evolve without losing the qualities that made them successful. For Cracker Barrel, the next chapter will likely focus on finding the right balance between honoring tradition and adapting to changing consumer preferences.
