The last thing you see before you pass has been a notion of fascination and debate between scientific and religious communities for years. While no one can confirm exactly what happens once we die, doctors have found that it is possible that the “life flashing before your eyes” notion holds some truth.
People who have recovered from near-death experiences explain several common visions. These include a flash of light, a tunnel of light, gates of heaven, etc. But others claim they saw their life flash before their eyes, in what is known as life recall.
Life recall (also sometimes referred to as “life review) is what occurs when a person sees their own history and memories in rapid mental flashes. It is usually some of the most important moments in a person’s life that flash through their mind very quickly and is often reported by people who have had near-death experiences.
The research on this phenomenon suggests that the brain’s activity in a person’s final moments creates these visions from the memories stored in the brain. Scientists notice increased brain wave activity in the moment before death, which could be a result of this rapid memory retrieval process.
Scientists explain that he brain is under great duress during these final moments, which is what could inspire images of light or the retrieval of memories. It is not uncommon for brain wave activity to persist, even in the moments just after death.
For example, in a study conducted in 2023 and published in the Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience, researchers found that the brain could remain active during the transition into death. The parts of the brain that remain active are responsible for memory retrieval or flashbacks
The specific parts ot he brain that the researchers observed as active during the transition to death are all associated with things like dreaming, memories, and information processing, which can account for the “life flashing before your eyes” phenomenon.
More research is needed to truly understand how the brain functions during and after death. There have been several studies that examine the brain activity of people who experience a brush with death, and doctors and scientists are starting to piece together just how long the brain remains active.
The common religious explanation for shared visions before death is that it is proof of Jesus’ existence. The flashes or tunnels of light are a common vision. Though science explains that these are the brain’s reactions to incredible stress.
As it turns out, the last thing we see before we pass could certainly be a flash of our most important memories and life events. The brain’s activity during and directly after death remains an area of scientific interest and study.
