Ella Langley’s country heartbreak single “Choosin’ Texas” has become the longest-running number one hit in U.S. chart history. Langley’s own growth mirrors the song’s rise: in 2023, around her Grand Ole Opry debut, she had fewer than 1 million monthly Spotify listeners. She now has more than 32 million. Heinichen says the song’s growth has been both explosive and consistent.
Musicologists Explain the Sound Behind the Song
Nate Sloan, a musicologist and assistant professor at the University of Southern California, compares Langley’s voice to “syrup,” noting her long vocal phrases create an almost trance-like effect. The song blends shimmery disco grooves reminiscent of Kacey Musgraves with rock and soul influences. Rhodes College professor Charles L. Hughes hears echoes of late 1970s and early 1980s country-soul crossover artists like Ronnie Milsap and Barbara Mandrell.
The Lyrics That Set It Apart
The song’s specificity stands out, according to Sloan, since detailed lyrics about people and places typically run counter to broad pop appeal. Langley’s paramour loves George Strait’s “Amarillo by Morning,” while she drinks Tennessee whiskey. It all comes together in the chorus, where Langley sings, “It doesn’t take a crystal ball to see, a cowboy always finds a way to leave.” Sloan says it echoes critics’ “sad banger” idea, done country style.
A Matching Record on the UK Charts
“Choosin’ Texas” also topped the UK chart in early September, replacing Sam Fender and Olivia Dean’s “Rein Me In.” That song also held the UK’s longevity record, at 23 weeks. The matching records have renewed chart-stagnation questions, with streaming services accused of favoring repeat plays over new music. A 2022 report by the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority found more than 60% of streams came from the top 0.4% of artists.
