Ford is preparing a $30,000 electric truck that CEO Jim Farley says will defy pickup traditions. Described as a new “silhouette,” it blends crossover practicality with sporty driving dynamics. With a bold production strategy and nods to Ford’s history, the automaker is betting big on making EVs affordable and appealing.
Ford calls this launch a Model T moment, aiming to redefine mass-market vehicles. The upcoming truck, built on the new Universal EV Platform, symbolizes a shift toward affordability, efficiency, and wide accessibility — echoing the original Model T’s historic role in putting America on wheels.
Speaking on The Verge’s Decoder podcast, CEO Jim Farley said the truck is technically a pickup but “really not a pickup.” It features a new silhouette, a larger passenger space than a Toyota RAV4, plus both a bed and frunk. Designed for agility and fun, it promises a driving feel closer to a sports car than a work truck.
Ford says the EV will likely slot between the Maverick and Ranger in size. Aerodynamic styling will improve range, while clever storage solutions maximize practicality. This balance is meant to attract drivers seeking versatility without the bulk of a full-size pickup.
Despite its utilitarian hints, the truck is being marketed as “fun to drive”. Ford targets 0–60 mph times comparable to a Mustang EcoBoost, aided by rear-wheel drive and possibly all-wheel drive options. The low center of gravity from its battery pack will also improve handling.
Farley teased a next-level digital experience, unlike anything even in China’s advanced EV market. Over-the-air updates, smart connectivity, and a driver-centric interface aim to distinguish the truck from rivals. Ford attempts to marry utility with tech-forward sophistication.
The vehicle will debut Ford’s Universal EV Production System, replacing the traditional assembly line with an “assembly tree.” Large single-piece castings, streamlined wiring, and modular sub-assemblies reduce complexity and improve speed. Ford expects up to 40% faster builds with higher quality.
Production will begin in 2027 at the Louisville Assembly Plant. Ford is investing $5 billion, including $2 billion to modernize Louisville and $3 billion at BlueOval Battery Park in Michigan. Together, the projects secure nearly 4,000 American jobs, a point Ford emphasizes as part of its national commitment.
Ford is targeting a $30,000 starting price, positioning the truck as an attainable EV for mainstream buyers. Cost savings come from simplified engineering, cobalt-free LFP batteries, and fewer parts. Ford claims ownership costs will beat those of a used Tesla Model Y over five years.
Adding to speculation, Ford has filed a trademark for the Ranchero name, once a car-truck hybrid. This suggests the EV could revive a nostalgic concept while reimagining it for today’s market. Whether it’s called Ranchero or not, Ford is clearly drawing from its past while innovating for the future.
