Archeologists Make Major Find Inside the Great Pyramid That Rewrites Old Assumptions

More than 4,500 years after it was built, the Great Pyramid of Giza is still surprising scientists. In a discovery announced in 2023, researchers revealed a previously unknown internal corridor hidden deep within the pyramid’s stone structure. The find is being described as the most significant discovery inside the pyramid in over a thousand years, and it’s forcing experts to rethink long-held assumptions about how the monument was built and what may still lie inside.

The discovery was announced by Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities following years of non-invasive research. Unlike earlier excavations that relied on physical digging, this breakthrough was achieved using cutting-edge imaging technology that allowed scientists to “see” through stone without damaging the structure.

Measuring about nine meters (30 feet) long and more than two meters (six feet) wide, the passage is large enough to allow several people to stand inside; an unusual feature for a structure long thought to be fully mapped.

Images captured inside show a stone-lined cavity with a gabled roof, carefully constructed rather than accidental. Officials emphasized that the corridor appears intentionally built, not the result of structural collapse or erosion.

Its location and design suggest it may have played a functional role during construction or served as part of a broader internal system that archaeologists have yet to fully understand.

How scientists found it without digging

The discovery was made by the international ScanPyramids project, a collaboration between Egyptian archaeologists and researchers from Germany, France, Japan, and Canada. Since 2015, the team has been using advanced technology to study the pyramids without drilling or excavation.

Tools such as ground-penetrating radar, ultrasonic testing, and ultra-thin endoscopic cameras were used to confirm the corridor’s existence. One camera, just 5 millimeters wide, was inserted between stone blocks to capture images of the space.

Researchers say they detected hints of the cavity as early as 2017 but delayed further exploration until multiple measurements confirmed it. “We didn’t want to dig indiscriminately,” one engineer explained, emphasizing the project’s cautious approach.

Does this change what we know about the pyramid?

The discovery has revived speculation about what else might be hidden inside the pyramid, including the long-mysterious “Big Void” detected in 2017 — a massive cavity at least 35 meters long near the pyramid’s core. Some archaeologists believe the new corridor could be linked to this unexplored space.

Veteran Egyptologist Zahi Hawass has suggested the corridor may protect something important, possibly even the true burial chamber of Pharaoh Khufu. Others urge caution, noting there is currently no direct evidence connecting the passage to a hidden tomb or treasure.
