Dolly Parton died on August 25, 2026, at age 80, but the future of Dollywood had already been shaped by decades of decisions, conversations, and ideas she developed with the park’s leadership. The Tennessee theme park has now announced new projects that reflect the values Parton emphasized throughout her life, including family, faith, imagination, kindness, and a deep connection to the Great Smoky Mountains.
Parton’s influence on Dollywood went far beyond putting her name on a theme park. Since becoming a co-owner in 1986, she helped establish a destination that combined amusement rides with music, Appalachian heritage, entertainment, food, and experiences designed around families spending time together.
Dollywood’s leadership says Parton wanted the park to be a place where guests could leave their worries outside the gates and concentrate on making lasting memories together. That philosophy remains central to the park’s plans, with President Eugene Naughton saying the company had extensive conversations with Parton over the years about how she wanted her vision carried forward.
Parton’s childhood in the Tennessee mountains strongly influenced the way she approached Dollywood and the stories told throughout the park. New projects will continue emphasizing her relationship with the Smokies, including improvements around the Robert F. Thomas Chapel that are designed to connect guests with the natural setting that inspired so much of her life and music.
One of the major new projects is a cascading mountainside waterfall outside the Robert F. Thomas Chapel, creating a quiet area where visitors can pause and reflect. The chapel will also receive stained-glass windows inspired by Ecclesiastes 3:1, a Bible verse that resonated deeply with Parton, with the artwork representing the changing seasons of the Smoky Mountains and her life.
Parton’s commitment to children and literacy will also become part of the park’s future through the planned Dream Maker character. Debuting in Wildwood Grove in 2027, the character and a Dream Wagon will encourage children to dream big, believe in themselves, and lift others up through courage and kindness, reflecting the mission behind Parton’s Imagination Library, which has given more than 330 million books to children around the world.
Dollywood plans to install interactive kiosks in Wildwood Grove where guests can share how Parton inspired them and what dreams they want to pursue. The park is also creating a new entrance to The Dolly Parton Experience, strengthening the connection between the attraction and the broader story of Parton’s life, career, and influence.
Parton’s vision did not call for Dollywood to remain frozen in time as a memorial to her career. The park continues to expand, including the 2026 debut of NightFlight Expedition, a more than $50 million immersive indoor adventure attraction that Dollywood described as its largest attraction investment in history.
Parton’s influence will also be highlighted beyond Dollywood through “In Dolly’s Footsteps,” a planned walking program in Sevierville featuring markers at locations connected to her childhood and family. Together with the park’s new installations, the project reflects an effort to preserve not only Parton’s celebrity legacy but also the places, people, and values that shaped her.
Dolly Parton’s death changed Dollywood, but the park’s leaders say the future she helped shape will continue to move forward. Her greatest influence may ultimately be seen in the philosophy behind Dollywood rather than any single attraction. By combining entertainment with family, faith, imagination, Appalachian heritage, and generosity, Parton created a theme park identity that officials now intend to carry forward for generations while continuing to welcome new guests and create new experiences.
