For more than 11 years, one entry in the UK’s business registry read Margot Elise Robbie. That entry now reads Margot Elise Ackerley. A new filing published by Companies House for LuckyChap Entertainment, the production company Robbie runs with her husband, Tom Ackerley, carries the updated name, according to Tyla. Reports date the confirmation to Wednesday, September 23, just months before the couple’s tenth wedding anniversary.
The paperwork submitted for LuckyChap changes the director’s listing from Margot Elise Robbie to Margot Elise Ackerley. Only the surname moved. Robbie was appointed a director in May 2015, and her maiden name stayed on the record for every year since. Page Six and People both reported the filing, and outlets across entertainment media followed within days. Her most recent screen credit, however, still carries the old name.
Sterling Point, a coming-of-age drama co-produced through LuckyChap, premiered on Prime Video on August 5 with Robbie billed as Margot Robbie, People reported. Ackerley is an executive producer on the series, making it one of the couple’s most recent joint projects. Several outlets expect her to keep using Robbie in her acting and producing work. Speculation about her married name is far older than this filing.
Talk of a name change started years before any registry entry. As early as 2018, The Daily Telegraph reported that a friend’s wedding seating plan listed the actress as Margot Ackerley. For the eight years that followed, no official document backed up what the guest list suggested. Robbie herself once insisted that romance was the last thing she wanted.
Robbie and Ackerley met in 2013 on the set of Suite Française, where she played Céline Joseph and he worked as an assistant director. She later described her mindset. “I was the ultimate single gal. The idea of relationships made me want to vomit,” she told Vogue in 2016. Friendship came first, long enough that she assumed he would never return her feelings. When romance did arrive, the pair kept it hidden even from their friends.
“We kept it a secret. Because we weren’t really taking it seriously,” Robbie told ELLE in 2018, recalling how they brushed it off as friends being friends. When the news got out, the reaction was loud. “It was dramatic,” she said. “Our house turned into The Jerry Springer Show for a moment there. But then the dust settled, and it was all good.” Two years after they began dating, the couple made the relationship permanent.
Robbie and Ackerley reportedly married at a private property in Byron Bay, Australia, in December 2016, then announced it with a photo of a kiss. She has since spoken warmly about married life. “Being married is actually the most fun ever, life got way more fun somehow,” she told Porter, adding that she feels a responsibility to be better as someone’s wife. Their production company had already been running for two years by then.
Robbie and Ackerley founded LuckyChap in 2014 with friends Josey McNamara and Sophia Kerr, aiming to put women’s stories on screen. Its first film, I, Tonya, arrived in 2017 and earned Robbie a best actress Oscar nomination at the 2018 ceremony, The Hollywood Reporter noted. Ackerley once described their shared working life to The Sunday Times: “It’s seamless. We don’t have a toggle on, toggle off.” The company’s biggest hit was still six years away.
Barbie, released in 2023, grossed roughly $1.4 billion worldwide and earned eight Oscar nominations. Its best picture nod went to Robbie’s LuckyChap and was shared with producers David Heyman, Robbie Brenner, and Ackerley himself, Deadline reported. Their family grew in October 2024, when the couple welcomed a son. The film set, the boardroom, and the home had become one shared world, and their tenth wedding anniversary arrives this December.
Robbie’s name change now sits in an official UK record, tied to the company where she and her husband have built their careers side by side. The filing covers business paperwork, and every indication points to Robbie remaining her professional name. Nearly a decade after the wedding, the director listing for LuckyChap reads Margot Elise Ackerley, while the credits on her work still read Margot Robbie.
