Two Academy Awards, hits like Pulp Fiction and Django Unchained, and a fortune estimated at $150 million: Quentin Tarantino has collected all of it without buying his mother a house or a car. The choice is deliberate, and he has said so on the record. A podcast interview from 2021 has recently resurfaced, and the story behind his rule is spreading again. It begins with one sentence his mother said to him when he was 12 years old.

A Teenage Mother in Knoxville Raised Tarantino Alone, and Let Him Watch Movies Most Children Never See

Tarantino arrived in Knoxville, Tennessee, in 1963, the son of a mother who was only 16. Connie McHugh worked as a nurse and raised him on her own after his father, aspiring actor Tony Tarantino, left before the birth. In Los Angeles County she married musician Curtis Zastoupil, who took the boy to film screenings, and she let him watch grown-up titles like Carnal Knowledge and Deliverance. His report cards were a separate matter, and teachers had started raising concerns.

Tarantino Says He Was Known as “the Dumb Kid” in Grade School, and Screenplays Written in Class Made Matters Worse

By his own account, Tarantino was a poor student in subjects that bored him, a reputation that stuck from third grade through sixth. Around age 12 he began writing screenplays for fun, including during lessons, and his teachers treated it as deliberate defiance. His mother always had a hard time with his “scholastic non-ability.” When the school notified her, she sided with the teachers and took it up with him at home. Mid-lecture, she raised both hands and curled her fingers into quotation marks.

The Sarcastic Finger-Quote Jab That Stayed With Tarantino for Decades

According to Tarantino, speaking on Brian Koppelman’s The Momentpodcast, his mother said: “This little ‘writing career’ that you’re doing? That st is over.” He later clarified that she meant he should not write in class when he was supposed to be doing something else. The comment struck a nerve regardless, and the sarcastic delivery stayed with him. He said nothing in reply. Inside his head, a 12-year-old was already drawing up terms.

“You Get Nothing Because You Said That”: The Vow a 12-Year-Old Made Against His Own Mother

The terms were simple. If he became a successful writer, she would collect nothing from it. No house, no vacations, no Elvis-style Cadillac for his mom. He boiled it down when he retold the story: “You get nothing because you said that.” Plenty of kids make angry promises mid-argument and forget them by dinner. Decades later, with the fortune in place, Koppelman asked whether he had kept his.

Tarantino Confirmed the Vow Still Stands: No House and No Cadillac for His Mother

The answer to Koppelman’s question was a simple yes. The vow had outlasted two Oscars and a string of box-office hits. Koppelman suggested that enough time had passed to consider buying her a house, and Tarantino rejected the idea outright. His record was not spotless, though. He conceded there had been a single exception, and it involved the IRS.

Tarantino said he once helped his mother out of a jam with the IRS. Koppelman argued that her put-down may have fueled his drive to prove her wrong, which might merit some gratitude. Tarantino held firm, saying a sarcastic tone about what matters to a child carries consequences. He was a new father then, with his son Leo about 18 months old. About two weeks later, his mother answered publicly.

Connie Zastoupil Says She Is Proud of Her Son and Calls the Uproar a “Media Frenzy”

In a statement to USA Today, Connie Zastoupil said she supports her son, is proud of him, and loves him and his growing family. She recalled the joy of dancing at his wedding and of receiving the news of her grandson Leo’s birth. Podcast remarks, she added, travel online without their full context, and she declined to join what she called a “salacious transactional media frenzy.” The portions of the statement published do not mention a house, a car, or the IRS.

Tarantino Waited Until After Jackie Brownto Buy a House and Told Eli Roth to Do the Same

Tarantino applies the same discipline to his own address. Director Eli Roth told Fortune that Tarantino advised him to hold off on buying a home until he could pay for it outright. A mortgage, in Roth’s words, turns you into “an employee of your house.” Roth recalls Tarantino saying he did not buy one until Jackie Brown, though everyone expected a purchase after Pulp Fiction. Then Roth’s own windfall arrived: Hostel, made for $3.8 million, earned $80 million. All he could hear was Tarantino’s advice.

Roth Rented Until 2007 and Says Tarantino’s Advice Spared Him From Taking Jobs He Did Not Want

Roth kept renting and went back to work, buying his first home in the summer of 2007 at age 35. He says a mortgage would have pushed him into directing jobs he did not want and cost him the opportunity of a lifetime. Tarantino’s rules on money share one thread: he decides where it goes. A mortgage never steered his career, and his mother never received a house or a car from him. More than 50 years after a 12-year-old set those terms, the 63-year-old director still holds them.
