Mount Everest has long been recognized as the tallest mountain on Earth, standing just under 29,000 feet. However, researchers uncovered two mountains that make Everest look small by comparison. These structures have been hidden for millions of years, but this groundbreaking research shows just how much of our planet still remains a mystery to us.
These newly identified mountains measure more than 100 times the height of Everest. Everest has always been a benchmark for scale, but the size of these newly-discovered structures is so immense that it challenges how we think about Earth’s largest formations. Unlike Everest, however, these peaks are not visible on the planet’s surface.
The mountains are located about 1,200 miles beneath our feet, near the boundary between Earth’s mantle and its core. Scientists made the discovery by tracking how seismic waves move during earthquakes. The waves slowed down in certain regions, revealing the presence of these massive structures.
These mountains are not the same as the rocky peaks that we are familiar with. Instead, they are composed of dense, unusual material. Their distinct makeup is what causes seismic waves to shift as they pass through and what alerted scientists to their presence.
Evidence suggests that these mountains are incredibly old, possibly dating back billions of years. Based on the research, it appears these mountain-like structures have remained stable, while the Earth’s mantle changes around them. Their age makes them some of the longest-lasting features inside the planet.
Scientists found slabs of tectonic plates that sank into the mantle near the discovery. They call this kind of environment a “graveyard” of Earth’s crust. The contrast between these cold plates and the hotter, dense mountains creates a dynamic underground landscape.
Earthquakes were the key to detecting these formations. As seismic waves travel through Earth, their speed and behavior shift depending on the materials they encounter. By analyzing these patterns, scientists were able to outline the scale and location of the hidden mountains.
For decades, researchers believed that the mantle was relatively uniform and well-mixed. The discovery of these mountains suggests that Earth’s interior is more complex and varied than once thought. This finding is reshaping scientific models of how the planet works.
Even though they are buried deep below, it is possible that the mountains play a role in shaping activity on the surface. Some theories suggest they could contribute to volcanic hotspots or influence how heat moves through Earth. More research is needed to confirm if they can have this kind of effect.
The discovery is a stark reminder about how much of our planet is still a mystery to us. We have so much more to explore and discover about the environment around us, and findings like these help us on that journey. By studying them further, scientists hope to better understand both the planet’s history and its future.
