Three Florida counties have declared states of emergency as dengue fever spreads at a pace officials are calling genuinely unusual for the region. Pasco County made the declaration on September 23, with Hillsborough and Pinellas counties following the next day. The move allows local officials to expedite mosquito-control operations, make emergency purchases, and seek state or federal assistance if needed.
The Florida Department of Health has confirmed 190 locally acquired dengue cases statewide this year, according to its latest surveillance report covering cases through September 19. Hillsborough County, home to Tampa, accounts for the overwhelming majority at 170 cases, followed by seven each in Miami-Dade and Pinellas counties, three in Orange County, two in Pasco County, and one in Palm Beach County.
This outbreak has now claimed a life, Florida’s first confirmed dengue death of 2026, involving a woman in Tampa who died from the illness. Hillsborough County spokesperson Chris Wilkerson described the current surge as “wildly unusual” for the region, a characterization echoed across multiple local health officials tracking the outbreak’s unexpected pace and severity this year.
The scale of this year’s outbreak stands out sharply against recent history in the state. Florida recorded just 62 locally acquired dengue cases in all of 2025, meaning 2026’s total already represents more than a threefold increase, marking the state’s second-highest annual case count on record. An additional 212 travel-associated dengue cases have also been reported separately this year.
What makes this outbreak particularly notable to health experts is where it’s actually happening this time. Previous Florida dengue outbreaks have historically centered in South Florida, but this year’s surge is concentrated instead along the state’s central Gulf Coast, specifically around Tampa Bay, a genuinely new geographic pattern for locally acquired transmission in the state.
Florida law limits how long these local emergency declarations can remain active without formal renewal. Each declaration automatically expires after seven days unless county officials formally extend it, meaning the current emergency status in all three counties will require ongoing reauthorization as long as the outbreak continues spreading at its current pace.
Dengue itself is a mosquito-borne viral illness that typically causes fever, severe body aches, nausea, and rash, according to the CDC. Most infected people either show no symptoms at all or recover within one to two weeks without complications. In rare cases, though, the illness can progress to severe dengue, a potentially life-threatening complication requiring immediate medical attention.
The specific mosquito species behind this spread has distinct behavior patterns worth understanding. “The Aedes mosquitoes that can transmit dengue are active during the day and thrive in warm, humid environments like those found in Florida,” said an entomologist with the SC Johnson Center for Insect Science and Family Health, makers of OFF! repellent, in a statement to Fox News Digital.
Prevention efforts center heavily on eliminating mosquito breeding grounds around homes specifically. The Aedes mosquito is a container breeder, needing just one tablespoon of standing water to lay eggs in buckets, planters, tires, or discarded toys. Experts recommend EPA-registered repellent, protection throughout the entire day rather than just dawn and dusk, and applying sunscreen before repellent when using both.
Anyone experiencing warning signs of severe dengue should seek immediate medical care rather than waiting it out at home. Those signs, which often develop within a day or two after an initial fever subsides, include severe stomach pain, repeated vomiting, unusual bleeding or bruising, difficulty breathing, and extreme tiredness or restlessness following the illness’s initial symptoms.
