Airport goodbyes usually end at the TSA checkpoint, where one person continues the trip and the other heads home. TikTok creator Rory thought that was the only option until he learned some U.S. airports allow approved visitors through security without buying a ticket. The discovery left him wondering how he had missed something that could have changed every goodbye with his long-distance girlfriend.
Rory couldn’t believe what he had learned. “Who was gonna tell me that airports actually had guest passes where you could stay with your partner when they’re sitting and waiting for their gate to board?” he asked. Instead of saying goodbye at the TSA checkpoint, he realized he might have been able to spend much longer with his girlfriend before her flight, leaving him genuinely frustrated.
Rory explained that he had always tried to squeeze every possible minute into airport drop-offs. “This whole time I’ve been trying to calculate… making sure I have enough time with my girl,” he said. After learning guest passes existed, he added, “Y’all don’t really mess with me… Cause why didn’t I know about this, bro?” His reaction struck a chord with viewers.
Rory’s discovery turned out to be real. According to CNN, about 21 U.S. airports offered some form of guest pass program as of June 2026. Participating airports include Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, Kansas City International Airport, Albuquerque International Sunport, and several others. The programs let approved visitors enter secure areas even without boarding a flight, though availability varies by airport.
A guest pass does not bypass airport security. According to CNN, visitors must apply in advance or through an airport kiosk, provide identification matching their Real ID or passport, receive approval, and pass through standard TSA screening. They cannot use TSA PreCheck, and each airport decides its own rules covering entry times, visitor limits, approved areas, and permitted items.
The programs serve several purposes beyond letting couples spend extra time together. Approved guests may help elderly travelers, accompany children, greet arriving family members, or simply enjoy airport restaurants, shops, art exhibits, and observation areas. Airports set their own requirements, and approval is never automatic because visitor numbers and security conditions can affect daily availability.
Many commenters immediately confirmed Rory’s discovery. “Did long distance for 2 yrs. Yup, it’s a thing,” one person wrote. Another joked, “Another thing I’ve learned on TikTok university.” One traveler shared an especially memorable experience: “My boyfriend sat with me for 30 minutes. It was the best thing ever,” describing how a visitor pass made an airport goodbye much easier.
The comments also showed that approval is never guaranteed. One viewer shared a disappointing experience after trying to accompany a younger traveler. “Nah they just denied me when I tried to sit with my 16yr old,” the commenter wrote. Individual airports decide who qualifies, and applications may be rejected because of local policies, security concerns, or visitor capacity.
Before the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, family members commonly walked loved ones all the way to departure gates. Those visits disappeared after airport security tightened nationwide. Today’s guest pass programs bring back a small part of that tradition under controlled conditions, requiring advance approval and TSA screening before anyone without a ticket enters secure areas.
Guest passes remain available at only a small number of U.S. airports, but they offer families, caregivers, and long-distance couples valuable extra time together. Rory’s viral surprise highlighted how unfamiliar many travelers remain with the programs. For people flying through participating airports, a simple application can replace a rushed farewell at the security checkpoint with shared moments at the gate.
