A woman at Planet Fitness had logged nearly twenty minutes on an upright stationary bike when a man walked straight past four vacant recumbent bikes and a second open upright bike to set up directly beside her. TikToker Somi (@somi_duh) filmed the moment in silence, letting her camera do the talking before adding a single, pointed caption on top: “Why are men like this?”

The Clock Never Lies: 19 Minutes and Counting

Before showing the man’s arrival, Somi’s video pans to her bike’s display, which reads 19 minutes and 25 seconds. That number matters. It proves she had already claimed her spot long before he showed up, and it rules out any argument that she was the one crowding him. The empty machines on either side of her make his decision even harder to explain.

He Left Five Minutes After She Did, Not a Minute Sooner

In her caption, Somi added one more detail that shifted how viewers read the entire clip: “And then he got up less than 5 minutes after I left.” His workout ending almost the second hers did became the single detail that split the comments section right down the middle.

The Video Hit 603,000 Views and a Comment War Followed

Somi’s clip raced past 603,000 views, and the comments section turned into a real debate. Some viewers were certain the man had picked that machine on purpose. Others thought Somi was reading too much into an ordinary coincidence. Neither side backed down, and the disagreement said as much about how strangers read each other at the gym as it did about one stationary bike.

“They Don’t Do That at Urinals,” One Commenter Wrote

The viewers siding with Somi didn’t hold back. “They don’t do that at urinals. So they for sure know better,” one wrote, comparing gym spacing to an unwritten rule most men already follow elsewhere. Another said they would have moved on the spot: “I would literally move & make it so obvious he is a weirdo for that.” A third pointed out ten other bikes sat open.

Not Everyone Was Convinced the Man Did Anything Wrong

Other commenters defended him. “Just let him workout, I don’t see him doing anything wrong,” one wrote. Another offered a more mundane theory: “Prob in front of the tv he wants to watch.” To this group, an empty machine nearby wasn’t proof of anything, just a man doing what most gym members do every day: choosing a spot and starting his workout.

A Reddit Thread Asked the Same Question Years Earlier

Somi’s video tapped into a frustration that predates TikTok. An r/ask Reddit thread once posed nearly the identical question: why do people at the gym pick the treadmill right beside a stranger when dozens of others sit open? Commenters floated their own theories, from a “favorite machine” that simply feels more comfortable to a screen positioned just right in front of one particular spot.

Humans Are Wired to Seek Out Company, Even at the Gym

Other commenters pushed back on the “creep” theory entirely, arguing that people are naturally social and don’t always want to be alone, even mid-workout. That instinct has deep roots. Humans evolved to rely on each other to hunt, gather food, build shelters, and guard one another from danger, according to Psychology Today. Choosing a machine next to a stranger, in this reading, is less a red flag and more muscle memory from thousands of years of group survival.

Personal Space Still Has Its Own Unwritten Rules

Even social instinct has a limit. Fitness guides list respecting a stranger’s personal space among the most basic pieces of gym etiquette, and Healthline recommends leaving enough room that fellow gym-goers can move freely and feel at ease. Psychology Today notes the exact distance people need varies person to person, which may be exactly why the same clip reads as harmless to some viewers and alarming to others.

The Real Issue Was Never Just the Bike

Somi’s video never proved intent, and it didn’t need to. The debate it sparked showed how differently people read the same twenty seconds of gym footage: one side saw a red flag, the other an ordinary Tuesday at Planet Fitness. What the clip did prove is simpler. An empty machine two feet away can mean everything or nothing, depending entirely on who’s asked.
