Rep. Andy Harris never got to finish his sentence. On Tuesday night in Cambridge, Maryland, the Republican congressman faced Democratic challenger Dan Schwartz at a League of Women Voters debate, with aging bridges, the poultry industry, and offshore wind projects on the agenda. Harris has represented the district since 2011, and the audience had already interrupted him several times. The question that pushed the room past its limit was about diesel.

The candidates were asked about the Trump administration’s deal with Russia over diesel. Schwartz criticized the move. Harris turned to the reason prices have climbed. Diesel is more expensive, he said, and nobody can argue otherwise. Then he asked why, and offered his answer: environmental regulations written by Democrats. He was midway through that explanation when the room took over.

Laughter, shouts, and groans rolled through the hall, drowning out the rest of his answer. Harris stopped and turned to face the people who had cut him off. “See, this is the problem,” he told them. The claim about environmental regulations stayed unfinished. His next sentence was a complaint about what the crowd said it believed, and it was addressed to one woman in particular.

Harris Accuses Audience of Backing Free Speech Only When It Suits Them

Harris accused the audience of supporting the First Amendment only when they agree with the speaker. Then he addressed one woman directly. She should have let him finish his sentence, he told her, addressing her as ma’am, and he called her rude in front of the entire hall. He would use the word again.

The debate moderator tried to calm the crowd, but chatter and laughter kept going. Harris pointed at a different audience member and delivered the same verdict: “You’re rude too.” He is seeking a ninth term, and the people filling that hall are the audience he has to persuade. Pointing a finger at them turned the evening from a policy debate into something closer to an argument. The person he pointed at answered back.

“You started it,” the audience member replied, throwing the accusation straight back at the congressman. Schwartz then stepped in to lower the temperature, saying it was “very important” that the crowd could hear from both candidates. Harris never got to finish his explanation for rising diesel prices. Federal energy officials have attributed the surge to other factors, and they named them in September.

Federal Data Blames Tight Fuel Supply as Maryland Farmer Spends $2,000 a Day on Diesel

The U.S. Energy Information Administration said in September that global supplies of distillate fuel, the category that includes diesel, have been tight. Crude oil prices have stayed elevated, which pushed costs higher over recent months. Refining activity has also dropped in Russia, China, and the Middle East, shrinking the amount of fuel available. The agency’s explanation points to markets thousands of miles from Cambridge. The effects reached a farm in Dorchester County.

Wendell Meekins has farmed in Dorchester County, inside Maryland’s First Congressional District, for roughly 30 years. During this harvest, he told WBOC television, his operation was spending more than $2,000 every day on fuel. Drought had already damaged his crops. “This is just a further cut into your profit,” Meekins said, and he described how hard it has become to come out ahead.

Diesel is only part of the squeeze. AAA data shows the national average for a gallon of gas up more than 46 percent since late February, from about $2.98 to roughly $4.36. Maryland’s regular gasoline went from $2.975 on February 26 to $4.259 on October 13, a rise of about 43 percent. Prices have also risen in every state with a competitive U.S. Senate race since the war in Iran began. That could leave Republican candidates and incumbents in trouble.

Harris Eyes a Ninth Term as 78 Percent Blame Trump Policies for Higher Costs

A Reuters/Ipsos poll of 4,506 adults found that 78 percent blame the Trump administration’s policies for higher costs. That figure includes 64 percent of Republican voters. The poll carries a margin of error of two points. Harris is a prominent ally of President Donald Trump and chairs the House Freedom Caucus. Those numbers describe the national mood. The race in Maryland’s First District has a much thinner set of numbers of its own.

Schwartz, who won the Democratic primary on June 23, is running on affordability, consumer protection, opposition to tariffs, protection of Medicaid, and limits on congressional stock trading. Public polling is sparse. One Democratic-sponsored survey of 482 likely voters, taken July 23 to 27, put Harris ahead 52 percent to 39 percent. Prediction market Kalshi gives Harris roughly a 92 percent implied chance of winning, though that figure reflects trader expectations and guarantees nothing.

The laughter in Cambridge was loud, and national polling shows plenty of frustration over costs. The one district survey available, sponsored by Democrats, still has Harris ahead by 13 points. A hall full of people can drown out a sentence. Settling the argument takes the whole district, and most of it was not in the room that night.
