Selena Gomez Used Her Hair To Respond To The Fashion Designer Who Called Her “So Ugly”

With the increased use of Instagram, public figures, celebrities, and influencers are more visible than ever. They can all post pictures and interact with their fans on the social platform, but with such high visibility comes a lot of haters, negativity, and drama. Selena Gomez is no stranger to the negative comments about her personal life on the social platform, but it’s rare that she will directly respond to her haters.

However, at one of Selena Gomez’s appearances during New York Fashion Week, she responded to Stefano Gabbana, the co-founder of Dolce & Gabbana, who called her ugly in a comment on an June 2018 Instagram photo by thecatwalkitalia. The photo has been taken down, but the screenshot from People shows his negative comment in Italian — which roughly translates to “it’s really ugly.”

Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time Stefano and business partner Domenico Dolce have found themselves in the midst of controversy. They’ve both made offensive comments and products surrounding equality, racism, family planning, and body issues. Combined, these issues have led many to #boycottdolcegabbana.

At NYFW, Selena wore the word “ugly” in her hair, spelled out in crystals as a subtle response to Stefano’s negativity.

And despite the things that have been said about her, she still *slayed* at the Coach NYFW show.

Selena has been open about how cyberbullying has affected her. She told The New York Times that sometimes she can’t avoid it, saying, “Imagine all the insecurities that you already feel about yourself and having someone write a paragraph pointing out every little thing — even if it’s just physical.”

This isn’t the first time the star has spoken out about beauty standards. Earlier this year, she wrote on her Instagram, “The beauty myth- an obsession with physical perfection that traps modern woman in an endless cycle of hopelessness, self consciousness, and self-hatred as she tries to fulfill society’s impossible definition of flawless beauty. I chose to take care of myself because I want to, not to prove anything to anyone. Wind in her sails.”

Her caption rings true for all of us — while it is stressful to deal with hate online, there are things you can do to keep your cool and  keep it classy, just like Selena.
