A Florida couple is facing child abuse charges after authorities say they forced their young daughter to drink homemade hot sauce as punishment despite knowing she was allergic to it. Robert Eldredge, 38, and Ashley Eldredge, 37, were arrested in Cocoa, a city about 45 miles east of Orlando, following an investigation that began when the child spoke to a school resource officer.
According to a probable cause affidavit reviewed by Law & Crime, the girl reported multiple forms of punishment at home, including being forced to ingest a mixture made of red peppers, onions and oil. She told authorities that the sauce caused stomach pain and vomiting and that she was allergic to at least one ingredient in the concoction.
The alleged abuse did not involve a single incident. Police say the child reported being forced to consume the homemade hot sauce on at least 10 occasions. The most recent alleged incident occurred just days before the parents were taken into custody.
According to court documents, the child told investigators that the punishment stemmed from an accusation that she had put “ink on the cat,” something she described as part of an “experiment”. Authorities say that when her parents believed she was lying, the discipline escalated.
The girl allegedly told officers that when she resisted drinking the hot sauce, her mother would hold her nose shut, preventing her from breathing until she swallowed it. Similar details were reported by other outlets, noting that the child said she often vomited after consuming the mixture.
Police documents state that both parents acknowledged the use of the homemade sauce as punishment during interviews with investigators. Authorities allege that the forced ingestion occurred repeatedly, even though the child had made clear that the substance caused her physical distress.
The investigation expanded beyond the hot sauce allegations. The child reportedly told officers that she was also struck with a belt, a wooden spoon and a hand as part of disciplinary measures. She allegedly stated that she had been hit up to 15 times by her father during one incident.
When officers examined the girl, they observed bruises and welts on her legs, which she attributed to being struck. A doctor later evaluated the child and reportedly described the physical abuse as “bizarre,” noting multiple injuries including long, parallel welts on the back of her thigh.
According to the affidavit, Robert Eldredge allegedly admitted to “whooping” his daughter and said he had intended to strike her buttocks but hit her legs instead. Authorities say Ashley Eldredge confirmed serving the hot sauce and acknowledged at least one instance in which the child vomited afterward.
Both parents were arrested and booked into the Brevard County Jail on charges of child abuse without great bodily harm, with a simple assault modifier. They remain in custody on bond as the case proceeds through the legal system.
Their next scheduled court appearance is set for April 7. It is not immediately clear whether either parent has formally entered a plea. An attorney for the couple did not immediately respond to media requests for comment.
The case has drawn attention to the boundaries between discipline and abuse, particularly when punishment involves known medical risks. Authorities have emphasized that the investigation began only after the child felt safe enough to disclose the alleged treatment to a school official, a reminder of how critical mandatory reporting systems can be in identifying and addressing potential harm inside the home.
