It took less than an hour for American Airlines to restore service, but the ripple effects lasted much longer. While flights are now operating again, the incident briefly brought one of the country’s largest carriers to a standstill at the height of a busy travel period.
The FAA implemented the ground stop at approximately 6:30 p.m. Eastern Time after American Airlines reported an IT issue affecting connectivity across parts of its network. The restriction applied to American Airlines and its regional affiliates, preventing aircraft from departing while technicians worked to restore the affected systems. About 45 to 50 minutes later, at 7:18 p.m. ET, the nationwide order was lifted as the airline confirmed that connectivity had been restored and flights were departing again.
American Airlines said the outage “briefly impacted connectivity for some of our systems” and apologized to customers for the disruption. The carrier has not disclosed what caused the technology failure, saying only that its teams restored operations quickly before resuming departures nationwide.
Although the outage itself was relatively short, the disruption extended well beyond the hour-long window because aircraft and crews were suddenly out of position across the airline’s network. Every delayed departure created additional scheduling challenges as airports worked to restart operations in sequence rather than all at once.
Flight tracking data illustrates the scale of the disruption. According to FlightAware, American Airlines had delayed roughly 1,100 flights—about 30% of its schedule for the day—and canceled 221 flights, or approximately 6% of scheduled operations. Flightradar24 also reported around 130 fewer American Airlines aircraft in the air compared with the same time one week earlier, highlighting how quickly the ground stop reduced traffic across the network.
Charlotte Douglas International Airport, one of American’s largest hubs, continued experiencing localized restrictions even after the nationwide ground stop ended. FAA advisories showed arriving flights were temporarily held at their departure airports because of congestion in Charlotte, where average arrival delays increased from roughly 24 minutes to nearly 50 minutes as crews worked through the backlog.
Modern airlines rely on interconnected technology to manage nearly every stage of a flight. Dispatch systems, crew scheduling, aircraft routing, flight planning, maintenance records, and communication with air traffic control all depend on reliable digital infrastructure. If key systems lose connectivity, airlines cannot safely release aircraft for departure, even if the planes themselves are ready to fly.
That is why American Airlines requested a temporary ground stop rather than allowing flights to depart with incomplete operational information. The FAA uses nationwide ground stops in situations where an airline cannot safely manage departures because of technical or operational issues. The measure is designed to prevent aircraft from leaving airports only to encounter larger problems once they are in the system.
The technology outage also unfolded during severe weather affecting much of the U.S. East Coast. Heavy thunderstorms prompted additional ground stops and delays at major airports serving New York City, Newark, Washington, D.C., and Baltimore. FlightAware reported more than 2,500 flight cancellations across the United States on July 28, meaning many travelers faced disruptions caused by both weather and American Airlines’ temporary system outage.
For most travelers, the immediate answer is reassuring: American Airlines says its systems have been fully restored, and flights are operating again. However, passengers traveling immediately after the outage may still encounter delayed departures, late-arriving aircraft, or crew scheduling adjustments as the airline continues returning its network to normal.
The incident also highlights how dependent modern air travel has become on digital infrastructure. Unlike mechanical issues affecting a single aircraft, technology outages can interrupt operations across hundreds of airports simultaneously because the same systems coordinate thousands of daily flights. Even a disruption lasting less than an hour can leave airlines spending the rest of the day repositioning aircraft and crews.
American Airlines has not announced the underlying cause of the outage or whether additional safeguards will be introduced to prevent similar disruptions. For passengers, the episode serves as another reminder that today’s biggest travel delays are not always caused by weather or mechanical failures. Sometimes a brief interruption to critical technology is enough to temporarily ground an entire airline.
