Former President Bill Clinton released a statement following the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old nurse who died during an encounter with federal agents in Minneapolis on Saturday. The incident represents the second shooting of an American citizen by immigration enforcement officers within three weeks. Clinton’s statement addresses concerns about federal enforcement operations and constitutional rights.

The shooting occurred during protests against federal immigration operations in Minnesota. Video footage shows officers restraining Pretti on the ground, with one officer removing a handgun from Pretti’s waistband before shots were fired. Pretti was a licensed gun owner. The administration states he posed a threat to officers, while his family disputes this account based on available footage.

Minneapolis has seen increased federal immigration enforcement activity in recent weeks. The Department of Homeland Security describes the operation as “the largest immigration enforcement operation ever carried out.” The operation, known as Metro Surge, has resulted in over 3,000 arrests. Local officials report masked federal agents conducting operations throughout the Twin Cities area.

Clinton’s Statement

Clinton wrote on social media: “In recent weeks, we’ve watched horrible scenes play out in Minneapolis and other communities that I never thought would take place in America.” He described people, including children, being “seized from their homes, workplaces, and the street by masked federal agents.” The statement noted that “peaceful protesters and citizens exercising their constitutional right to observe and document law enforcement have been arrested, beaten, teargassed, and most searingly, in the cases of Renee Good and Alex Pretti, shot and killed.”

Clinton’s statement continued: “All of this is unacceptable and should have been avoided. To make matters even worse, at every turn, the people in charge have lied to us, told us not to believe what we’ve seen with our own eyes, and pushed increasingly aggressive and antagonistic tactics, including impeding investigations by local authorities.” The former president’s statement expressed concern about federal accountability and local investigation access.

“Over the course of a lifetime, we face only a few moments where the decisions we make and the actions we take will shape our history for years to come. This is one of them. If we give our freedoms away after 250 years, we might never get them back.” The statement concluded: “It is up to all of us who believe in the promise of American democracy to stand up, speak out, and show that our nation still belongs to We the People.”

Trump Administration Responded

The Trump administration states that Pretti carried a loaded firearm with multiple magazines during the encounter. FBI Director Kash Patel said on Fox News, “You cannot bring a firearm, loaded, with multiple magazines, to any sort of protest that you want. It’s that simple.” President Trump said on Sunday, “I don’t like any shooting. I don’t like it. But I don’t like it when somebody goes into a protest, and he’s got a very powerful, fully loaded gun with two magazines loaded up with bullets also.”

Video footage reviewed by local officials shows Pretti on the ground during the encounter. His family released a statement disputing the administration’s characterization of events. They said the available footage does not support claims that Pretti posed an immediate threat. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem stated Pretti “arrived at the scene to inflict maximum damage on individuals and to kill law enforcement.” Different parties have drawn different conclusions from the same footage.

Former President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama issued a joint statement about the incidents. They said federal agents have engaged “in tactics that seem designed to intimidate, harass, provoke and endanger the residents of a major American city.” The Obamas stated that administration officials have offered “public explanations for the shootings of Mr. Pretti and Renee Good that aren’t informed by any serious investigation—and that appear to be directly contradicted by video evidence.”

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz activated the National Guard following the incidents. He called for an end to current federal immigration operations in his state. Local prosecutors announced they are reviewing evidence from both shooting incidents. Department of Homeland Security officials have stated that federal jurisdiction applies to the operations. Disputes have emerged between state and federal authorities over access to evidence and investigative authority.

The incidents have generated responses from various groups across the political spectrum. Both the National Rifle Association and Gun Owners of America issued statements regarding legal firearm ownership rights. Various political figures have commented on the balance between immigration enforcement and constitutional protections. Public fundraising for Pretti’s family has raised significant amounts. The situation has prompted discussions about federal enforcement methods and individual rights.

Clinton’s statement reflects ongoing debates about federal enforcement authority and civil liberties. The incidents in Minneapolis have prompted statements from multiple former presidents and current officials. Public reactions have varied, with some supporting stronger enforcement measures and others expressing concern about federal tactics. The situation continues to develop as state and federal authorities address questions about jurisdiction, accountability, and the application of constitutional protections during immigration enforcement operations.
