The new tool is being introduced through the Phone by Google app and will begin rolling out to Android 12 and newer devices, with support arriving first on Pixel smartphones. The feature focuses on detecting situations where scammers attempt to impersonate friends, relatives, colleagues, or other trusted individuals using advanced artificial intelligence technology.
How The New Verification System Works
Google describes the new feature as a behind-the-scenes verification process that helps confirm whether a call is genuinely coming from the person it appears to be. Enabled by default, the system operates automatically without requiring users to take any additional steps.
When two people are using the Phone by Google app, a silent verification signal is exchanged between their devices at the beginning of a call. This process serves as a digital confirmation that the call is being placed from the actual device associated with that contact.
If someone attempts to impersonate a trusted person, that verification signal will not be present. In such cases, the receiving device can detect the discrepancy and issue a warning, helping users recognize that something may be wrong before sharing personal information or sending money.
Fighting The Rise Of AI Voice Scams
The introduction of this technology comes at a time when AI-powered scams are becoming more common. Criminals can now generate convincing voice replicas capable of sounding remarkably similar to family members, employers, or public officials.
A common scenario involves a scammer posing as a close relative and claiming to be facing an emergency. Because the caller ID may display a familiar name and the voice sounds authentic, victims can feel pressured to act quickly without verifying the situation.
Google’s new detection system aims to add an extra layer of protection against these tactics. By validating whether a call originates from the expected device, users receive an additional signal that can help them distinguish legitimate conversations from fraudulent attempts.
More Android Features Arrive Alongside The Security Update
The fake call detection announcement was part of a broader set of Android updates revealed by Google. Among them is a new Google Photos feature that allows users to organize and explore clothing items appearing in their photo libraries, making it easier to browse outfits and fashion combinations.
Google Play Books is also receiving a feature called “Catch Me Up,” which provides readers with story recaps before they continue a book. The update also introduces the ability to ask questions about highlighted passages in supported English-language titles.
Another enhancement expands the capabilities of Circle to Search. Rather than searching for individual clothing items one at a time, users can now identify multiple pieces within an outfit simultaneously, creating a faster and more convenient way to discover products and styles directly from an image.
