President Donald Trump recently gave an update on his previous announcement about rebate checks for Americans that left some citizens more confused than informed. Many hope they can expect a partial refund for their contributions to the new tariffs he rolled out.
What is a Rebate Check?
Tariff rebate check is a government program that would return some of the revenue collected from the tariffs on imported goods to Americans. The taxpayer would be granted this check to offset the increased prices that consumers and businesses are facing as a result of the tariff program.
Looking at the Bill
The bill, originally proposed by Senator Josh Hawley, is called the American Worker Rebate Act of 2025. It has not yet been passed by Congress, though taxpayers are eager to know when and how they can expect payments.
How Much Will People Get?
The baseline rebate is proposed to be $600 per adult as well as an additional $600 per child in the household. Payments will be less for people with an adjusted gross income over $75,000 and joint filers over $150,000.
Some Doubt About the Checks
Recently, however, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent cast doubt that Americans would ever see these tariff rebate checks. He explained that the revenue generated from the tariffs would first be put towards lowering the nation’s debt before taxpayers receive any of it.

In a rather disappointing update, Trump gave a vague announcement as to the progress of the bill and program. He told reporters at a Cabinet meeting that the tariffs are bringing in “a lot of money” to the country.
Unclear Progress
He also notified the press that there is a concept being worked out to refund Americans. That being said, he shared no details or progress as to how this is being completed, leaving Americans to wonder if they will receive benefits from the tariffs.
Message from President Trump
Trump explained to reporters, “We have a lot of money coming in. It’s coming in tremendous numbers. There’s a concept of making a dividend to the people of this country who have paid a lot of taxes and got nothing for it”.
Debt First, Taxpayers Second
However, in the same interview, he stated, “Primarily we plan to pay down debt, but there’s a possibility that we take a piece of it and make a dividend to people”. This echoes the Treasury Secretary’s sentiment that the national debt will take priority over rebate checks.
Conclusion
Reports show that the U.S. has made $100 billion in tariff revenue and many taxpayers hope they can expect to earn some of that money back in rebate checks. As it stands, it appears there has not been progress towards the plan to do so.
