Boston Lost Its Three-Story Newbury Street Store
One of the most prominent closures happened at 360 Newbury Street in Boston, where TJ Maxx shut down its three-story store on January 5 after nearly a decade. A Massachusetts WARN notice confirmed that 117 workers were affected, although most employees were offered positions at nearby stores, according to Inc. The closure removed TJ Maxx from a highly recognizable shopping location, but it did not represent a broader withdrawal from Massachusetts.
Silver Spring, Maryland, Also Lost a Longtime Location
TJ Maxx also closed its store at 8661 Colesville Road inside Ellsworth Place in Silver Spring after approximately 10 years at the location. Inc. reported that around 60 employees were affected by the closure, making it another significant local departure for customers accustomed to shopping there. The Silver Spring address appears on the publication’s confirmed 2026 closure list alongside another Maryland store farther west.
The Cumberland, Maryland, Store Is Permanently Closed
A second Maryland TJ Maxx at 1262 Vocke Road in Cumberland has also closed. The location appears on Inc.’s confirmed 2026 closure list, and TJ Maxx’s own current store directory identifies the Cumberland store as permanently closed. Customers in the area should therefore check the retailer’s locator for other nearby options rather than making a trip to the former Vocke Road location.
Gilbert, Arizona, Is Another Reported 2026 Closure
The list extends beyond the East Coast. Recent reporting identifies the TJ Maxx at 4075 S. Gilbert Road in Gilbert, Arizona, among at least four stores that have closed during 2026. Individual closures like Gilbert demonstrate that TJ Maxx continues to adjust its real estate portfolio even while the chain as a whole remains significantly larger than many retailers currently reducing their physical presence.
Meriden, Connecticut, Closed Because TJ Maxx Moved Nearby
Connecticut shoppers saw another TJ Maxx disappear, but this one came with an important distinction. The Meriden Mall store closed as TJ Maxx relocated approximately 23,000 square feet of retail space to The Shops at Stone Bridge in nearby Cheshire, with the new location opening in March. Despite the closures, TJ Maxx’s U.S. store count has continued moving upward. TJX reported that TJ Maxx increased from 1,348 to 1,354 U.S. locations during the fiscal quarter ending May 2, 2026, while the company’s worldwide portfolio across all banners grew by 48 stores to 5,262. By the quarter ending August 1, TJX’s total store count had climbed again to 5,285, providing important context for a closure list that might otherwise make the chain appear to be undergoing a major contraction.
TJX Says Its Long-Term Plan Calls for Thousands More Stores
TJX is planning for substantially more physical retail, not less. The company has raised its long-term potential to roughly 7,500 stores across its current banners and markets, leaving room for more than 2,000 additional locations compared with its current footprint.
