For more than half a century, vitamin C has been one of the first things many people reach for when they feel a cold coming on, but decades of research suggest its reputation has been greatly exaggerated. Evidence indicates that vitamin C does not prevent the average person from catching a cold, and starting supplements only after symptoms appear does not seem to help. The Vitamin C Cold Craze Took Off in the 1970s

The biggest misconception is that taking vitamin C will stop the average person from getting sick in the first place. A major review cited by ScienceDaily found that taking around 200 milligrams or more each day did not reduce the number of colds experienced by the general population. There was an exception among people exposed to intense physical stress, including some athletes and military personnel, but that finding does not translate into broad protection for everyone.
Its Real Benefit May Be Making Severe Symptoms Slightly Easier

Vitamin C may still provide a modest benefit, but it is considerably smaller than its cold-fighting reputation suggests. A 2023 meta-analysis involving 10 placebo-controlled trials and 2,736 participants found that regular vitamin C supplementation was associated with a 15% reduction in measures of severe cold symptoms. The researchers found a greater effect on severe symptoms than mild ones, suggesting vitamin C may help somewhat with the hardest part of a cold rather than eliminating the illness itself.
Even the Improvement in Cold Duration Is Fairly Small

When researchers translate the findings into actual time saved, the difference becomes easier to understand. ScienceDaily reports that regular supplementation may reduce the duration of severe symptoms by roughly 10%, meaning five days of severe symptoms could potentially be shortened by around 12 hours. If the severe stage lasts only one day, the improvement would amount to roughly two and a half hours, which is useful context for anyone expecting vitamin C to dramatically shorten an illness.
Taking Vitamin C After Symptoms Start Doesn’t Appear to Help

Waiting until your throat feels scratchy or your nose starts running and then taking a large dose may not deliver the benefit many people expect. Reviews cited by ScienceDaily found no meaningful benefit when vitamin C supplementation began only after cold symptoms appeared. The modest effects observed in research have generally involved people who were already taking vitamin C regularly before becoming sick.
Mega-Doses Are Far Above What Your Body Normally Needs

The quantities promoted for preventing colds can be dramatically higher than normal nutritional requirements. Pauling recommended roughly 1,000 to 2,000 milligrams per day, while ScienceDaily notes that the recommended daily intake for Australian adults is only 45 milligrams. Ordinary foods can readily provide vitamin C, with the article noting that roughly half an orange, several florets of cooked broccoli, or a portion of orange juice can supply around that daily amount.
More Vitamin C Is Not Automatically Better

Because vitamin C is widely available without a prescription, taking extremely large quantities can seem harmless, but high doses can cause problems. Regularly consuming more than 1,000 milligrams per day may contribute to diarrhea, nausea, stomach cramps, and bloating, while increased oxalate excretion may raise the risk of kidney stones in susceptible people. High-dose vitamin C can also affect iron absorption and potentially interact with certain cancer treatments and cholesterol-lowering medications.
Getting Vitamin C From Food Still Matters

None of this means vitamin C itself is unimportant, since the nutrient plays essential roles in normal health and must be obtained through the diet. The evidence simply does not support treating large doses as a reliable shield against the common cold. For most people who eat a varied diet containing fruits and vegetables, the goal should be getting enough vitamin C to meet nutritional needs rather than assuming increasingly large doses will provide increasingly powerful protection.
