Menopause can cause noticeable changes to the skin as estrogen levels decline, including dryness, itching, wrinkles, sagging, and hormonal acne. These changes can begin during perimenopause and continue after menopause as the skin becomes less able to retain moisture and maintain its previous structure.

Estrogen helps the skin produce oil and retain water, while collagen provides much of the skin’s structure and firmness. Healthline notes that collagen production can drop by about 30% during the first five years of menopause, making this period particularly important for understanding changes in skin texture and appearance.

A few adjustments can help women manage these changes without creating an unnecessarily complicated routine. Gentle cleansing, regular moisturizing, daily sun protection, and targeted ingredients can help support the skin as hormone levels shift.

Dryness, Acne, and Sensitivity Can Become More Common

Dry and itchy skin can become more noticeable during perimenopause and after menopause because declining estrogen affects the skin’s ability to retain moisture. Some women may also experience increased sensitivity, redness during hot flashes, or hormonal acne caused by changes in the balance between estrogen and androgen hormones.

Healthline recommends hydration-focused ingredients such as hyaluronic acid and ceramides for dry skin, while niacinamide may help support the skin barrier. Women with acne may consider ingredients such as salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, or retinoids, although sensitive skin may require a slower and more cautious approach.

Avoiding unnecessary irritants can also make a difference when the skin becomes more reactive. Fragrance, dyes, and alcohol in some products may worsen irritation, so a simpler routine with gentle cleansers and moisturizers can be a better starting point.

Collagen Loss Can Lead to Wrinkles and Sagging

The decline in estrogen during menopause is closely associated with reduced collagen production, which can contribute to thinner-looking skin, fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging. Healthline cites research indicating that collagen production may fall by around 30% during the first five years of menopause and then continue declining more gradually.

Sun exposure can make visible aging more pronounced because ultraviolet radiation damages elastin and contributes to the loss of skin elasticity. Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen is therefore an important part of protecting the skin from additional UV damage.

Certain ingredients may also help improve the appearance of aging skin, including retinoids, vitamin C, glycerin, glycolic acid, and lactic acid. However, active ingredients can irritate sensitive skin, so introducing them gradually and choosing products based on individual needs is important.

What Women Should Remember About Skin After Menopause

Menopause-related skin changes are a normal part of aging for many women, but they do not mean that healthy and comfortable skin is out of reach. A consistent routine centered on hydration, gentle products, daily sunscreen, and carefully selected treatments can help address many common concerns.

Women should also remember that professional guidance is available when home care is not enough. A dermatologist or menopause specialist can help address persistent acne, severe dryness, wrinkles, facial hair, or other changes and can discuss whether treatments such as prescription medications or procedures are appropriate.

The most important step is to recognize that skin may need different care during and after menopause than it did earlier in life. Paying attention to changes, protecting the skin from the sun, and seeking professional advice when necessary can help women maintain healthier-looking skin throughout this stage of life.
