A growing number of employers say some Gen Z job candidates are bringing “ghosting” from dating and social life into the workplace. According to a Resume.org survey cited by Fox Business, 54% of hiring managers said they had been ghosted by Gen Z candidates after extending a formal job offer, including situations where candidates stopped responding, failed to finish paperwork, or never appeared for their first day.

Some Candidates Accept Jobs and Then Disappear

Workplace ghosting can happen after a candidate has already received and accepted an offer. Instead of telling the employer they changed their mind, some candidates simply stop communicating or fail to complete the remaining steps required before starting. Fox Business reported that some hiring managers have encountered candidates who accepted positions but never completed paperwork or showed up for their first day.

The Survey Shows How Common the Problem Can Be

The 54% figure comes from a Resume.org survey of hiring managers and shows that the behavior is not limited to isolated incidents. It does not mean 54% of all Gen Z workers ghost employers, but rather that more than half of the surveyed hiring managers reported experiencing the behavior among Gen Z candidates after making formal offers.

A Difficult Job Market Makes Ghosting Riskier

The timing is particularly important because young workers are entering a difficult hiring environment. Fox Business described today’s labor market as a low-hire, low-fire environment, meaning employers may be adding fewer workers while also holding onto existing employees. In that environment, disappearing after accepting an offer could damage a candidate’s reputation at a time when opportunities are already more competitive.

Economic Pressure May Be Part of the Bigger Picture

Mary Julia Koch, associate editor at The Wall Street Journal’s Free Expression, connected the trend to broader economic pressures affecting young adults. She pointed to housing affordability and inflation, arguing that many members of Gen Z have become discouraged after struggling to reach traditional milestones such as homeownership.

Growing Up Online May Affect Workplace Communication

Koch also suggested that growing up with digital communication may influence how some Gen Z workers handle uncomfortable conversations. For people accustomed to texting and communicating through screens, directly telling a recruiter that they have changed their mind can feel more difficult than simply ending communication.

Interviews and Face-to-Face Conversations Can Feel Intimidating

The issue may extend beyond accepting job offers. Koch said growing up online can make face-to-face interactions more intimidating for some young adults, potentially making interviews and other workplace conversations more stressful. That does not explain every instance of ghosting, but it offers one possible reason why some candidates may choose silence rather than an uncomfortable conversation.

Gen Z’s Workplace Expectations Are Different

Ghosting is part of a broader conversation about how younger workers approach employment. Previous research cited by Fox Business has found that Gen Z and younger Millennials place significant value on flexibility, work-life balance, and control over their schedules, while many younger workers have also experienced high levels of stress and burnout. Those expectations can influence whether someone decides a job is worth accepting or remaining in.

    Employers Still Expect Basic Professionalism

Whatever the reason, employers generally expect candidates to communicate when circumstances change. Even a short email declining an accepted offer is different from disappearing completely, particularly because companies may have already stopped recruiting other candidates or begun preparing for the new employee. As Koch noted, responding to a hiring manager is especially important in a competitive job market where professional relationships can matter later.

Ghosting Could Carry a Bigger Cost Than Gen Z Workers Expect

Gen Z’s growing presence in the workforce is changing how employers think about communication, flexibility, and career expectations, but ghosting after accepting a job can create problems for both sides. The Resume.org survey cited by Fox Business found that 54% of surveyed hiring managers had experienced Gen Z candidates disappearing after receiving formal offers, highlighting how widespread the complaint has become among employers. For young workers, the simplest way to avoid burning a professional bridge may be equally straightforward: if a job no longer feels right, communicate the decision instead of disappearing.
