Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel is facing renewed backlash after a joke about First Lady Melania Trump drew sharp criticism from across the political spectrum. Kimmel’s remarks came two days before an armed man was apprehended at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington, D.C., where President Donald Trump, the First Lady, and Vice President JD Vance were all in attendance.

The joke in question came from a mock version of the Correspondents’ Dinner that Kimmel posted online. Addressing the First Lady, he said she had “a glow like an expectant widow.” The joke landed with laughs at the time, but took on a different tone after Saturday’s incident. A Secret Service agent was injured when Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California, was apprehended at the event carrying a long gun and three knives.

Kimmel addressed the uproar on his Monday night program, clarifying that the joke was about the age gap between the president and the First Lady, not a reference to violence. “It was a very light roast joke about the fact that he’s almost 80 and she’s younger than I am,” he told his audience. He also noted his longstanding public stance against gun violence, pushing back on any characterization of the comment as threatening.

The Trumps Call for Kimmel’s Firing, Putting Disney in a Familiar Spot

Both President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump called for Kimmel’s firing from ABC, which is owned by Disney. Melania posted on X that Kimmel’s “hateful and violent rhetoric” was designed to divide the country, calling him a “coward” who hides behind the network. The White House also weighed in, with Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt describing the joke as “completely deranged.”

The controversy has landed squarely on the desk of Josh D’Amaro, who became Disney’s CEO just over a month ago after Bob Iger stepped down. Analysts have described it as one of his first major public tests. The situation carries echoes of last fall, when Kimmel was temporarily pulled from air following backlash over comments he made about the man accused of killing conservative commentator and Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, a decision that was made under Iger’s watch.

That earlier controversy had real consequences for Disney. Broadcast affiliates Nexstar and Sinclair pulled “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” from their stations, hundreds of artists signed an open letter opposing the suspension, and the company reportedly lost billions in market value within days. Kimmel returned to air six days later, tearfully walking back his earlier comments. How Disney handles the current situation now falls to D’Amaro.

The Response Is Split, and the Free Speech Question Returns

The backlash against Kimmel has not been limited to the political right. Former Obama advisor David Axelrod called the joke “tasteless” and said Kimmel should apologize. At the same time, supporters have rallied around the host. Jane Fonda’s Committee for the First Amendment, representing more than 3,000 entertainment industry figures, urged ABC not to back down, framing the situation as a test of the network’s commitment to free expression.

A MoveOn petition calling on Disney to keep Kimmel on air surpassed 230,000 signatures by Monday, before Disney made any public statement about its plans. Legal observers have noted that Kimmel has strong First Amendment protections and that any move by Disney to suspend or remove him could invite more criticism than the joke itself. “It would look very weak,” Jordan Matthews, a partner at Holtz Matthews LLP, told The Wrap, adding that a suspension would set a troubling precedent.

The broader late-night landscape has been in flux. Stephen Colbert’s “The Late Show” was canceled last year, and other programs have scaled back. For many in the industry, those changes have sharpened attention on the Kimmel situation, raising questions, industry observers say, about the pressures facing political commentary on television.

What Disney Decides Next Could Define More Than Just One Show

For Disney, the Kimmel situation may present a complicated balancing act. An ABC staffer told Fox News Digital that any media company should think carefully about the values it reflects, noting the difference between programming that leans into cynicism versus content that reflects something more constructive. It’s the kind of internal tension that rarely surfaces publicly, but the current controversy has brought it to the forefront.

Entertainment attorney J. Christopher Hamilton, who teaches at Syracuse University, framed D’Amaro’s response as a genuine opportunity as much as a risk. Any reaction that appears reactive or purely driven by politics, he argued, would be more damaging than the joke itself. Disney has not publicly commented on the matter, leaving the situation unresolved as of Monday.

Kimmel’s contract, the network’s relationships with its affiliates, and a broader conversation about press freedom have all converged around a single punchline. How Disney responds may say as much about where the media industry stands right now as it does about the future of one late-night show.
