Sometimes a major life change calls for a haircut, and Kelly Clarkson has certainly had a major few weeks. Less than a month after saying goodbye to The Kelly Clarkson Show, the 44-year-old singer stepped back in front of NBC cameras looking noticeably different from the woman viewers had watched sign off from daytime television.

During a Sept. 21 appearance on Today, Clarkson debuted chin-length blond waves with a side part, a dramatic departure from the long, caramel-colored hair she wore during her talk show’s Aug. 31 finale. She completed the look with a camel-colored short trench coat and black semi-sheer tights while promoting the Season 30 premiere of The Voice.

Clarkson didn’t actually address the haircut during the interview, so she offered no explanation for why she decided to make the change. The timing, however, puts the transformation at the beginning of a distinctly different period in her life — one with no daily talk-show schedule and considerably more room for her family and music.

Her Talk Show Ended After Seven Seasons

The Kelly Clarkson Show officially aired its final episode on Aug. 31, ending the daytime series seven years after its 2019 premiere. The finale, titled “Kelly Clarkson by Request,” leaned heavily into something that had become inseparable from the show: Clarkson singing.

“From the very first episode, music has been a cornerstone of this show,” Clarkson told viewers. Over its run, she said the series had produced more than 1,000 “Kellyoke” performances. For the finale, audience members requested songs, and Clarkson performed everything from her own hits — including “Since U Been Gone,” “Sober” and “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You)” — to a cover of “Golden” from KPop Demon Hunters. She also released her single “I’d Be Lying” alongside the final episode.

The most personal farewell came with her children, River and Remington, joining her onstage. A montage revisited their appearances through the years before Clarkson wrapped her arms around them for her final sign-off. “I loved being in your homes each day,” she said, adding that she had “immeasurable gratitude” for the crew, band and viewers who had been part of the experience.

Now, Her Days Look Very Different

Clarkson had already made clear that leaving wasn’t simply about wanting another television job. When she announced in February that the seventh season would be her last, she said stepping away from the daily schedule would allow her to prioritize her children, something she described as “necessary and right for this chapter of our lives.”

Her former husband and the father of her children, Brandon Blackstock, died from melanoma in August 2025. Clarkson later spoke about reevaluating what she could realistically keep on her plate as her family’s circumstances changed. “You kind of start seeing life as how precious it is, too,” she said earlier this year. Eventually, her conclusion was straightforward: “It’s time to pull back.”

That decision is already changing ordinary parts of her life. Clarkson told Today that she is “momming so hard right now,” taking her children to school and picking them up every day. Although she has lived in New York City since 2023, she said she had never really experienced living there without working a traditional daily schedule. Now she can “go get coffee and walk around” and spend more time simply being in the city with her family.

But Stepping Back From Daytime TV Doesn’t Mean Slowing Down Everywhere

Ending the talk show is also reopening a door that Clarkson said had gradually become harder to walk through: her music career. Hosting a weekday program came with an intense schedule, and she acknowledged that she had been forced to decline opportunities that didn’t fit around it.

“It was really great having the talk show, but I did have to say no to quite a bit of music things,” Clarkson told Today. Without that commitment, she said it has been “really cool saying yes” to festivals and other musical opportunities she couldn’t previously accommodate. One of those is Stagecoach, where Clarkson is scheduled to open for Garth Brooks on April 25, 2027.

She isn’t disappearing from television, either. Her Today appearance coincided with her return to The Voice, where she has served as a coach at various points since 2018. Clarkson even joked about one small luxury her new schedule provides: without the talk show’s early call times, the devoted Dallas Cowboys fan can finally “stay up all night” watching games. The blond bob may be the most immediately visible sign that something has changed, but the bigger transformation appears to be happening on her calendar — fewer mornings built around a daily talk show and more room for the two things she says she wants to prioritize now: her kids and her music.
