Southwest Airlines has historically been a favorite for plus-sized travelers as it generally provided wider seats and more generous policies. However, a new policy going into effect on January 27 will likely change that. Here’s everything we know about this new policy and the impact it will have on plus-sized travelers.
Southwest Airlines Under Fire

Southwest made headlines earlier this year for other policy changes that upset its customer base. The company removed two of its biggest perks. The airline was previously known for letting its passenger pick their seats before boarding the plane and having a generous free-bag policy. It was announced in May that both of these perks would be terminated.
The Previous Policy for Overweight Passengers

Before the new policy, overweight passengers who needed a little extra room on the flight could either buy an extra seat in advance and be refunded later, or they could request a free extra seat once they arrived at the airport.
A Policy That Stood Out From the Competition

This accommodating policy helped Southwest stand out from the competition of other airlines and made it a go-to for passengers who need more room. The guaranteed refund was a celebrated perk of many Southwest loyalists.
The New Policy

Now, the refund for an extra seat is still possible, but not guaranteed under the new policy terms. The statement released by the airline read, “To ensure space, we are communicating to Customers who have previously used the extra seat policy that they should purchase it at booking”.
The New Terms

Starting in January, the airline will still offer refunds on second tickets if the flight is not fully booked at the time of departure. Both tickets must be purchased in the same booking class, and the passenger must request their refund within 90 days of the flight.
Book Ahead or Pay

Additionally, if a passenger does not book ahead of time, they will not be offered a free extra seat at the airport. They will be required to purchase an extra seat, and if the flight is full, they will be booked on another flight.
Impact for All Travelers

The new policy announcement also added that Southwest would be starting to assign seats instead of allowing passengers to pick their own, a move that will impact travelers of all sizes.
“Worse for Everybody”

Jason Vaughn, a travel agent, explained that the new rule doesn’t benefit any customers. He stated, “I think it’s going to make the flying experience worse for everybody”. He went on to explain that the airline has lost sight of its customer base, which was one way in which the airline stood out from its competition.
Looking Forward

As of now, the old policy is still in effect, and plus-sized customers can expect to be refunded for the extra seats they purchased prior to their flight. The new changes will not be officially implemented until January 2026.
