The most stressful part of an early morning flight often begins long before passengers reach security. Between checking bags, navigating crowded terminals, and racing against boarding times, even a 6 a.m. departure can require waking up in the middle of the night.
United Airlines is testing a different approach. The Chicago-based carrier has officially debuted its “Twilight Bag Drop” program at Chicago O’Hare International Airport after several months of pilot testing, allowing eligible travelers to check their luggage the evening before their flight instead of the morning of departure.
The service is designed to streamline airport visits for passengers on early departures. Instead of waiting in baggage lines before dawn, travelers can arrive at the airport the next morning with only their carry-on luggage and head directly toward security.
How the “Twilight Bag” Drop Works

The program currently applies to select United passengers departing on early morning flights from O’Hare. Eligible travelers receive an email invitation before departure explaining how to participate.
Passengers check in online, pay any applicable baggage fees in advance, then bring their luggage to United’s curbside baggage drop the night before departure. At O’Hare, bags are accepted between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. or, in some announcements surrounding the rollout, between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m., depending on the operational schedule communicated for the service. The program generally covers flights departing between about 5 a.m. and 10 a.m. the following morning.
Once travelers return to the airport the next day, they can bypass the baggage check process entirely and proceed directly to the TSA checkpoint, potentially saving valuable time during one of the airport’s busiest periods.
Early Results Suggest Travelers Like the Idea

United says customer response has been stronger than expected. According to the airline, nearly 1,600 bags were processed through the Twilight Bag Drop program during the testing period between March and early July, with participants describing the experience as both easy and convenient.
The airline officially highlighted the service during the Fourth of July travel period, when Chicago’s airports were preparing for record passenger volumes. The Chicago Department of Aviation projected more than 1.62 million travelers would pass through O’Hare and Midway over the holiday stretch, making any reduction in morning congestion especially valuable.
Online reactions have been mixed. Some travelers praised the convenience, particularly families, golfers, and skiers who often travel with multiple bags. Others questioned whether making a separate trip to the airport the night before would actually save time, especially for people who live farther away from O’Hare.
A Small Test With Bigger Possibilities

For now, Twilight Bag Drop remains limited. Besides O’Hare, United also offers a similar overnight bag-check option at Guam International Airport for eligible early morning departures, and participation is currently available only to travelers who receive invitations.
United says it plans to continue operating the program at O’Hare and is evaluating whether to expand it to additional hubs. The airline has not announced which airports could be next, but executives say the overwhelmingly positive response has encouraged them to extend the trial.
The overnight baggage program is also part of a broader push to simplify airport travel. Reports have surfaced that United is experimenting with other baggage innovations, including a potential home bag pickup service for some customers before departure. While that concept has not been officially launched, it reflects a wider effort by airlines to reduce friction at the airport and make the check-in process feel less like the first obstacle of every trip.
